One Piece-Episode 992
Continuing last week's theme of "Oh my Usopp there is so much Wano," we now have much more arc to get through this week. Much of the runtime is pretty quiet. We have a dialogue about what's going to happen to Momonosuke, Kaido complains in his room, and Law takes the Akazaya samurai to Onigashima. Not that much happens, even when it comes to getting certain essential players into their appropriate positions in the scenario as it had been.
At least this episode manages to be incredibly more entertaining over the course of. Law and the Heart Pirates are always a hoot when they're together - in fact, anything not as grim as Law is hilarious when he's around. Bepo, Penguin and Shachi, those goofballs, make me feel good. We also get a few good moments with the Akazaya Nine and Marco, the most shockingly comedic combination of the season. Besides the textual content, I also found it funny that Kaido arrived at the social gathering very late, in the vein of a teenager coming downstairs and his mom and dad saying, "Look who finally decided to leave his room."
The big hit, however, is the revelation of Yamato. Even though it's only a short piece, Yamato's revelation about the discovery of Oden's diary and his idolatry is truly spectacular. I think it's a testament to Eiichiro Oda's incredible skills that, even after telling the same story for over twenty years, he finds methods to create new and compelling characters. Yamato's central push to idolise Oden, Kaido's ultimate enemy, is simply a sensitive theme, a dramatic culmination of a series with broader implications. Wano is long and, because of its size, can be tedious at times, but when the results are there, they're there.
Plus, Robin talks like a villain with a moustache, and I think I get it.
